Health and Safety Information for Homeowners and Volunteers Working on Flood Cleanup

Important Health and Safety Information:

Tetanus: you should be up-to-date with your tetanus shot, within the last 5 years.

Mold: mold is now an issue. You will need an N95 mask to prevent breathing in mold, which can cause serious illness.

Asbestos: many old houses still have asbestos, which can be found in furnaces, pipe insulation, siding, ceiling tiles and old loose insulation. An N95 will help with this hazard as well.

Lead paint: many old houses might have lead paint present.

Health Insurance: we don’t want anyone to be injured while volunteering, but accidents happen and we want to make sure you have your own coverage.

Other personal protective equipment (PPE) like muck boots, gloves, and safety glasses are recommended. Masks as well, as noted above with mold and asbestos, but also dust and other airborne debris.

Here are some guides and information for anyone working on flood cleanup and mitigation. We want to keep you all safe as you work to save your property and possessions.
