Crazy Mountains Oral History Project

Crazy Mountains Oral History Project

The Crazy Mountains Oral History Project (CMOHP) is an innovative initiative between Appearing Flying Woman Consulting (AFWC), Park County Environmental Council (PCEC), Montana Historical Society (MHS) and sixteen diverse narrators from various Montana communities. This project aims to gather and preserve the diverse histories and stories tied to the Crazy Mountains, a region undergoing rapid development and facing challenges related to land access, use, and care. Together, we are creating an oral history archive, a website, podcast series, listening and discussion sessions, and stewardship recommendations. The goal is to influence how we care for each other, the land, and its biodiversity today and in the future.

Why it Matters

The Crazy Mountains region is more than a scenic landscape; it’s home to rich biodiversity and a deep, complex human history. Ongoing conflicts over land access and use have made it essential to understand the perspectives of all who live in, work in, and care for the area. Through oral history, the CMOHP provides space for diverse voices—including Indigenous Peoples, ranchers, scientists, and recreational users—to share their stories and experiences. By exploring these narratives, the project fosters deeper understanding and connections between people and nature and generates guidance for future conservation efforts.

This project is unique in its dedication to inclusivity, ensuring that often-marginalized perspectives are heard and archived. It's about much more than documenting the past—it’s about shaping future relationships with the land and its inhabitants.

How to Get Involved: The Crazy Mountains Oral History Project offers several ways for you to engage:

  • Podcast Series and Website (Coming in 2025): Experience a three-part podcast series and explore a website that will provide curated oral histories, insights into the landscape’s history, and ideas for collaborative land stewardship.

  • Listening and Discussion Sessions: In 2026, join us for community sessions where we’ll explore key themes from the project. These gatherings will be an opportunity to listen, learn, and discuss new ways to care for the land and its biodiversity.

  • Contribute Your Story: If you have a unique connection to the Crazy Mountains or surrounding areas, consider sharing your experiences as part of our ongoing effort to deepen understanding and relationships.
