Join the Crazy Mountains Oral History Project

The Crazy Mountains Oral History Project (CMOHP) is an innovative collaboration between Appearing Flying Woman Consulting, PCEC, the Montana Historical Society, and sixteen diverse narrators from across Montana. This initiative is dedicated to gathering and preserving the powerful histories and stories connected to the Crazy Mountains, a region experiencing rapid development and facing complex land access, use, and stewardship challenges.

Through oral history recordings, a podcast series, community listening sessions and stewardship recommendations, this project fosters a deeper understanding of the Crazy Mountains’ past and present, ensuring that the voices of those connected to this land—including Indigenous peoples, ranchers, scientists, hunters and recreational users—are heard and archived for future generations.

The CMOHP is not just about preserving history—it’s about shaping the future of land stewardship by amplifying often-marginalized perspectives and fostering stronger connections between people and nature.

With the generous support from the Mellon Foundation’s Humanities in Place program and Park County Arts Council, we are seeking four creative professionals to assist with photography, podcast production, and web design. Your expertise will be instrumental in amplifying voices, preserving history, and guiding future conservation efforts in the Crazy Mountains.
