Suce Creek and Park County Update

Suce Creek Road

It has been three weeks since PCEC first shared news about the proposed Suce Creek development, and thanks to everybodies efforts—speaking up, writing, calling, and showing up at commission meetings—we’ve made real progress in bringing this issue to the forefront. The stories everybody has shared about the unbridled growth, commercialization, and changes in our communities underscore how essential it is to establish local guardrails on commercial and industrial development.

In response to our request for a public work session on Suce Creek and similar developments, the Park County Commission included Suce Creek on their agenda and discussed it at this week's meeting. We appreciate their willingness to consider the concerns raised by Park County residents.

At Tuesday's meeting, the commission determined that they need to consult with the county attorney before taking any action regarding a public work session. They expressed some hesitancy, concerned that any action regarding Suce Creek would come back to haunt them.

Presently our county commissioners do not have the authority to weigh in on commercial or industrial development and cannot act on Suce Creek, even if they wanted to. This is why we continue to push for a public work session—to explore tools that could allow for community review of such developments.

We will continue to urge the commissioners to meet and discuss the need for local options in an open, public setting. We are not asking them to stop Flex Capital Group—since the commission does not have that authority—but to have a meaningful conversation about the future of Park County.

Now, more than ever, we need our commissioners to exercise the responsibility and leadership they were elected to hold before more of Park County’s working lands and wildlife habitat are lost to luxury destination resorts. Protecting our community’s character and preserving our natural landscapes requires thoughtful proactive action.

Thank you to everyone who has engaged on this issue and made your voice heard. Your dedication is invaluable. We will keep you updated on developments regarding Suce Creek, and in the meantime, we encourage you to continue asking the County Commissioners to schedule public work sessions on this issue soon.
