Join PCEC for these June events!

Last night, I saw something new.

In the Sacajawea Park Lagoon, a blue heron sat under the tree in a few inches of water, waiting for a fish. Within minutes, it caught a trout and ate it whole.

Also in the park: the bats flew by, the goslings are starting to lose their yellow, and I saw my first Western Tanager of the season.

It was a good day in the park.

Starting tomorrow, there will be a Farmers Market every Wednesday. We also have many more great events this month.

Hope to see you there!

DEQ Railroad Cleanup update

Thursday, June 8, 7:00 p.m.

Community Room, City-County Complex, Livingston

Or Virtual: Register now!

The Burlington Northern Livingston Shop Complex Facility includes an active rail yard used for repair and maintenance that is currently operated by Montana Rail Link (MRL), and the surrounding area where contaminants have come to be located.  Previous rail yard operations resulted in soil and groundwater contamination, including chlorinated solvents, petroleum, lead, asbestos, and other compounds released to the environment.

In September 2001, DEQ issued the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Facility, which requires cleanup actions and additional investigations. BNSF Railway (BNSF) continues to investigate contamination and conduct cleanup. The Mission Wye Facility is located five miles to the east of Livingston, MT and was an industrial landfill that received waste from the Burlington Northern Livingston Shop Complex Facility (BN Livingston). DEQ issued the ROD for Mission Wye in March 2020 and the selected remedy for final cleanup includes monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for groundwater contamination and institutional controls (ICs). BNSF continues to implement the selected remedy through annual groundwater monitoring and IC inspections.

Join PCEC to learn more about downtown master plans.  The City of Livingston is gearing up to start the process of preparing a new downtown plan and there’s a lot to learn about how they work and how Livingston’s new downtown plan will fit with other planning documents. Once it  starts, the process will need plenty of public input so we get a downtown plan that meets community goals and overall needs.
